IFRA Classes 1 and 6

IFRA Classes 1 and 6 have an additional requirement – due to the possibility of ingestion, the materials used in the fragrance must also be approved for use in food.
IFRA advise this means ‘that all ingredients should be listed as having “no safety concern”, for example by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and/or as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) in accordance with the US Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act’.

When an IFRA Certificate is produced within Formpak, Class 1 and 6 will show ‘not approved’ if any of the ingredients used do not have a FEMA number. FEMA number is used to indicate that the material is approved for use in food. Therefore, if you have a fragrance that is required for Class 1 or 6, make sure all the ingredients are approved for use in food and enter an appropriate FEMA number for each ingredient. FEMA number is found in the Identification tab of View / Modify a Raw Material. The addition of the FEMA number calculates the FoodUse Property which is located in the Food Information Property Group. This can be manually amended to Yes by unticking is calculated and changing the Property Value to Yes.
